I’ve played games for as long as I can remember. I loved Scrabble growing up, Risk was another one. One of my friends growing up, his brother introduced us to AD&D and he had tons of 1st Edition Books and I remember long afternoon of exploring those. I remember finding the basic Dungeons & Dragons red box edition with the dice you had to use crayons on at KayBee hobby at the mall in Sioux City and buying that. My sister, when I was growing up had some rip-off of Dungeons & Dragons but I don’t think she ever figured it out.
I first learned about gaming in the area when I discovered Tri-R-Hobby (which was on Pierce St.) and I attended a few MAGE events. One was at the old Kay Dee Stations (now torn down) and then there was one at the Mall. From there I attended my first MAGE Con at the old Hilton (name now changing daily).
I want to bring gaming back to what it was then. There was this incredible sense of wonder and fun and community that was evolving. We need to get back to the basic principals that gaming had then. Like minded people sharing an incredible hobby. Unfortunately, things got mired over the years, the economy just isn’t what it used to be, and we need to refocus. That’s what I want to do. Of course, it isn’t easy, 4 kids later, I’m working on bringing up the next generation of gamers. While that’s an amazing and wonderful thing, that isn’t necessarily an easy thing. But I’m hoping to be a positive and steadying influence on the local gaming scene, I want it to grow and improve and get back to basics. Playing games!
